How to Score More in JEE Chemistry Exam?

Chemistry is composed of 3 wide and interrelated branches. It is a diverse subject and involves a lot of subtle concepts. It is hard and at the same time it is simple to score well in the subject. The strategy for maximizing the score is simple – learn more and more facts and apply them to the problems.

We will broadly discuss about each of the branch of chemistry, mentioning strategies to maximize output of a given effort.

 

Chemistry Prep

 

Physical Chemistry: Physical Chemistry is essentially a mixture of Maths and Physics. There is a theory involved (like Physics) and then the problems can be solved using Mathematics applied to the theory assumptions. Most students score more easily in Physical chemistry. All it needs is plenty of practice. The following points will help you to score more in Physical Chemistry:

  • Read enough theory and make sure you understand it well
  • Ask yourself questions about the topics you read to ensure that you did not miss out a subtle point
  • Practice enough questions from various sources
  • Gradually increase the difficulty level of the problems to ensure that your analytical ability develops
  • Spend a lot of time in understanding mole concept. Make mole your friend and try to apply it in the problems
  • Try not to segregate physical chemistry from organic/inorganic chemistry. Sometimes you will be stuck with a physical chemistry problem because you didn’t know the reaction involved

Organic Chemistry: Some students enjoy organic chemistry, others fear it more than anything else. We enlist below some points to make sure organic chemistry is your best friend in exams

  • Read enough theory to make a right set of facts. If you are unsure of anything, read it from many good sources until you are confident that you understand it well
  • Understand the concept of electrophile and nucleophile properly. Fix in mind that a nucleophile attacks an electrophile and apply this principle to chemical reactions
  • Solve a number of problems of organic synthesis. Try finding alternative methods which give a better yield
  • Practice, practice and practice. Organic chemistry needs lots of practice. There is strictly NO other method

Inorganic Chemistry: Inorganic chemistry is the big gun for several students. A lot of good students end up spoiling JEE purely because of inorganic chemistry. There have been instances of students scoring highest in Mathematics and Physics in JEE and not getting even 50% marks in Chemistry because of zero confidence level in inorganic chemistry. Below are some of the pointers to maximize your score:

  • NCERT is the god book. A large number of questions in JEE and other competitive exams are directly lifted from JEE
  • Read, read and read. Read a lot. Read from different sources to gain more and more knowledge. Make sure you read from good sources else you might end up confusing yourself because of some typo in the reference book. JD Lee Inorganic Chemistry by Wiley publishers is one of the best books for inorganic chemistry
  • Revise regularly else you will forget everything you memorized.
  • Understand periodic table properly. The periodic properties will help you to solve inorganic chemistry problems by correlating it to a similar problem you have already seen
  • Practice sufficient questions from different resources to get a firm command over the topic.
